Musical Director
Overview
The position of Musical Director for the Novato Music Association Chorus (NMA) involves responsibility for the preparation, rehearsal and production of all chorus performance events. Additionally, the Director is responsible for ongoing quality, growth and appropriate levels of challenge for all performers.
The chorus performs one major show of professional caliber in the late fall and in the spring. Each show includes four to five performances over two sequential weekends. Less formal performances may be held as well during the season.
The Musical Director derives his authority from the Board of Directors and reports directly to the Board.
Position is available for 2017-2018 season (August thru May).
Other Responsibilities
• Improve the musical knowledge and vocal skills of the members.
• Educate the members in the art of musical performance and choral singing.
• Develop and maintain a performance repertoire.
• Works with the accompanist to create a rehearsal and performance schedule.
Seasonal Responsibilities
Although strategic in nature, the role of Musical Director involves, to the greatest extent, responsibility for the musical activities during a given season. These activities are grouped, roughly, into the following categories:
1. Preparation Prior to the beginning of each season, the Musical Director will select the music to be performed for that seasonal production.
2. Rehearsal - The Musical Director will prepare a rehearsal schedule and plan to allow the Chorus to meet the goal of quality performances. Regular rehearsals occur weekly, on Monday evenings and bi-monthly Saturday mornings. Sectional rehearsals may be required outside of regular rehearsal time on occasion.
3. Production - The Musical Director is responsible, with the Board, for the utilization of Chorus resources, including committees, for all aspects of any production.

- The Musical Director will work will with the accompanist to rehearse different sections during the early stages of musical mastery.
3. Production - The Musical Director is responsible, with the Board, for the utilization of Chorus resources, including committees, for all aspects of any production.
Typical tasks are:
- Staging, including choreography.
- Selection of non-musical show components (e.g., readings, dialogue, narration, lighting, sets, props, costumes, etc.).
- Provide input to the show program, including a personal message.
- Conduct both Chorus and accompaniment during theater rehearsals and shows.
- Address audience during performance.
